Self Portrait

I've recently come to the end of my first real relationship and needless to say i have changed and grown. we had a lot of rough drafts together but it wasn't till now that I've done some for just myself. This project was my reflection of how i would perceive and love me if i were my lover, to appreciate myself, the good and the bad.

I started with a circle of paper, i liked the confines of a starting point and the freedom of a small "canvas" (that is easily thrown away if need be, like i said rough drafts and forgiveness!). Each paper has a characteristic on it which is illustrated by the mood of the colour and decorations. on the back of them i wrote a quote or fact supporting its cause, for example i am "sensual" because i like dark chocolate, massages and baths with lavender... i think thats pretty sexy don't you? ;) It was interesting to see how arranged together they made a web of my personality, the colours turned out to fall into corresponding groups such as truthfullness (light), passion (bright) and neurotic (dark). however at the time i was focused on loving myself and grouped most of the bad characteristics under one heading to make a happy yet realistic portrait :)

I used white cardstock and acrylic paints, sandpaper, some other papers for embelishments and various notions (buttons, charms, found photos, fake flower parts) and just covered a box to make them a home, or a body if you will!

  1. I like this kind of free-form journaling. This box will be interesting to revisit in a decade or so.

  3. Hi Meaghan, thanks for your kind note on my blog. I like the freeform nature of this project--feels very "in the flow." All best to you on your journeys--school, artistic and otherwise!
